The Analog-Modeled Synths Worth Their CPU in 2026

The argument about whether software can sound analog is over. It ended years ago, and the emulations won. The real question in 2026 is narrower: which of these instruments justify what they cost your session? Analog modeling is expensive by nature — proper component-level emulation means oversampling, zero-delay feedback filters, per-voice drift calculated in real time. Every voice is its own little circuit simulation. On a laptop with one instance, nobody cares. In a scoring template with two hundred tracks, or a game project running audio middleware alongside the DAW, per-instance cost is the whole conversation. So here's the honest shortlist: the synths that give back more than they take.

u-he still sets the standard. Diva remains the most versatile analog model ever shipped: you mix oscillator, filter, and envelope blocks from the Minimoog, Jupiter, MS-20, and Juno lineages into a single instrument, and its filters saturate and self-oscillate like circuits instead of algorithms pretending to be circuits. It eats CPU, yes, but the tiered quality modes — Draft for writing, Great for playback, Divine for final render — mean you only pay full price when you bounce. Repro-1 and Repro-5, modeling the Pro-One and Prophet-5 respectively, go deeper still: individual instruments simulated down to component behavior, and they reward that obsession. The Prophet voice variance, the way the filter barks when you push resonance into drive — if you score anything with retro tension in it, Repro-5 is the fastest route there.

Then there are the efficient ones, the synths you can stack forty deep without watching the meter. Synapse Audio's The Legend is a Minimoog with absurdly tight code — three oscillators, a proper feedback loop, and it runs like a stock plugin. Obsession does the same trick for the OB-Xa. TAL's U-NO-LX remains the default Juno-60 for half the industry, chorus included, and BassLine-101 covers the SH-101 for pocket change. discoDSP's OB-Xd is nearly free and good enough that producers keep it installed next to the paid options. Cherry Audio deserves its reputation too: DCO-106, Memorymode, the GX-80 — budget prices, light footprints, and none of them embarrass themselves in a mix. Korg's own MS-20 and Polysix emulations also earn their slot, because nobody models Korg's screaming filters quite like Korg.

At the other end sit the heavyweights, where the CPU bill is the point. GForce's OB-E models the Oberheim Eight Voice — which is really eight discrete SEM modules, each with its own temperament — and polyphonic patches bloom in a way no single-board polysynth ever managed. It is genuinely heavy, and nothing else sounds like it. Arturia's CS-80 V, after a full rebuild a few versions back, finally does justice to the most expressive polysynth ever made; the Blade Runner association is a cliche at this point, but the instrument earned it. Softube's Model series — 72 for the Minimoog, 80 for the Prophet-5, 84 for the Juno-106 — are the polite options: accurate, stable, well-behaved in a mix. And Universal Audio's native ports mean its Minimoog and PolyMAX now run without Apollo hardware, which quietly changed the math for everyone else.

When you're choosing, skip the blind-test debates and check three practical things. First, aliasing: run a high-resonance filter sweep up top and listen for digital fold-back — the good ones stay clean, the cheap ones spit. Second, per-voice behavior: drift, slop, voice-to-voice variance, whatever the developer calls it, because that imperfection is exactly what you're paying for. A perfectly stable analog emulation is just a synth with worse features. Third, eco modes, because the grown-up workflow is tracking light and rendering heavy, then freezing to audio before the session gets out of hand. And if you curate or sign producers, know this: these tones are all over the charts right now. The Juno chorus and the Prophet stab aren't retro signifiers anymore. They're simply the current vocabulary.

If you're buying one, Diva for range, Repro-5 for character. If you're spending nothing, OB-Xd and Cherry Audio's free instruments will carry you further than they should. The CPU tax is real, but it's lower than it's ever been, and what you get back — movement, imperfection, a sound that sits in a mix without three EQ moves — is still the best deal in plugins. Pick the one whose flaws you like and learn it properly. Nobody remembers which synth made the pad; they remember whether the track moved.
