Most producers treat saturation like seasoning—a pinch here, a dash there across multiple tracks, hoping it'll add warmth or grit to individual elements. But there's a fundamentally different approach worth exploring: threading everything through a single saturation plugin on your master bus. When you commit to this strategy, something unexpected happens. Your mix stops fighting itself. This isn't a gimmick or a shortcut. It's a constraint-based mixing philosophy that reveals how much of what we call "mix glue" actually comes from forced harmonic unity rather than from individual processing choices.

The mechanism is straightforward but easily overlooked. When every element—drums, vocals, bass, guitars, synths, everything—passes through the same nonlinear processor, they occupy a shared harmonic space. This isn't about coloration in the traditional sense, where you're chasing a vintage tape sound or a particular console aesthetic. Instead, you're creating a physical constraint that forces cohesion at a fundamental level. The drums can't sit separately from the vocals anymore. The bass won't float away from the guitars.
